The MRIs were repeated, and the official diagnosis is an inflamed rotator cuff. (It is also being called a strained rotator cuff.)
For now, Glavine is supposed to rest the shoulder -- no throwing -- for two weeks. Then he'll be making the drive to Birmingham again for yet another evaluation.
Andrews repaired a torn left flexor tendon in Glavine's elbow last Aug. 21 and also cleaned up the shoulder. Glavine, penciled in as the team's fifth starter, was scheduled to make his season debut Saturday at Pittsburgh. Instead, left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes will be recalled from Class AAA Gwinnett to take the start.
Glavine had stretched out to 85 pitches and was pleased with the separation in velocity between his pitches. And he was pitching normally in his Sunday rehab start with Class AA Mississippi. It wasn't until his at-bat in the bottom of the second inning that Glavine felt left shoulder discomfort. He made his warm-up pitches before the third inning, then thought better of it and took himself out.
Glavine has said all along that he wasn't going to push his return. He wants to be as healthy as possible when he takes the mound for real.
No one is saying this is the end of the road yet -- the latest results don't indicate that. But it certainly sets Glavine back.
MARLINS 5, BRAVES 1: Kelly Johnson's fourth-inning homer was the Braves' only offense Tuesday. Javier Vazquez struck out 11 and threw 106 pitches, but that carried him through only six innings, and he left on the short end of a 3-1 score.
