McCann will be with the Braves Friday and Saturday, then will report to Class AAA Gwinnett to try out hitting and catching while wearing his new glasses. And he'll be trying out a new catcher's mask as well, this one a hockey-style mask that will fit more comfortably over the glasses.
While the idea of something being wrong with McCann's eyes has freaked out a lot of people, McCann wasn't one of them. His eyes are healthy; it's only his vision that has changed. And even the dry eye issue has not been his biggest heartache.
"I hate being on the (disabled list)," he says. "I just feel like I'm not here. And I hate that."
McCann is really hoping the specs work out because if they don't, further surgery would be the last option. And that might mean more time on the DL.
He has the position he plays to thank for that. While former Brave right-hander Greg Maddux famously had his eyes lasered between starts one season, McCann doesn't have that option. That's because of the constant possibility of being hit in the face by a bat or a ball, or scratching his eye while ripping off his mask on a play,
BRAVES 7, ASTROS 2: Righty Derek Lowe didn't get the ground ball outs he wanted but he held the Astros to two runs nevertheless. Right fielder Jeff Francoeur, moved up to the clean-up spot, delivered two first-inning runs on his third homer of the season, then drove in another with the bases loaded in the fifth.
