Bravesworld.com | Atlanta Braves News, braves Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Jair Jurrjens served as the translator for Jorge Campillo after Campillo's latest impressive outing Wednesday. After the TV crews left, Campillo said softly to the writers, "I'll try to do it myself next time."
Campillo need not apologize for his performance anywhere, let alone for being less than comfortable with his English on camera. He is more concerned with being sure he understands the nuances of questions than he is the clarity of his answers. Because he certainly knows what he thinks, what he's talking about and how to pitch. About that, his manager and teammates are more than willing to gush.
"He's legit," manager Bobby Cox said. "When we stuck him in the rotation, we didn't know for sure. But he certainly opened our eyes up in relief -- the way he was pitching, the way good hitters were swinging at him -- that he should start. He looks like a class, veteran pitcher to me. You want to look at a true pitcher? He's the epitome to me."
Second baseman Kelly Johnson didn't think it was a big deal at all that he drove in three of the four runs in Campillo's last win. Instead, he enthused, "Jorge, geez, he won the game the whole way around. Slash bunt, base hit, pitched phenomenal again.
"Everything he throws is funky. He throws a changeup that cuts, he throws a changeup that sinks. He's been awesome. It's amazing that he fell in our laps."
"He can do so many things with the ball that not many people can do," catcher Brian McCann said, his eyes lighting up. "He's in control the whole game out there. He calls his own game. It's no fluke. He knows how to pitch."
"He's been huge," third baseman Chipper Jones said. "We've been able to count on him to at least give us a quality start every time out. At least six or seven innings. He's gonna keep us in the game. He's a smart pitcher. He knows how to change speeds, keep guys off balance. Even when they know off-speed's coming, they still can't hit it."
BRAVES 4, BLUE JAYS 0: RHP Jair Jurrjens got the calls on the corner and pitched eight brilliant innings of a three-hit, shutout ball. LHP Mike Gonzalez tossed a perfect ninth to close out the win. 1B Mark Teixeira drove in three runs, including two of a first-inning home run, and played sparkling defense.
