--CF Mark Kotsay was traded to the Red Sox for minor league OF Luis Sumoza. Kotsay was scratched just before Tuesday's game against the Marlins as a precaution against injury. But with talks still going on, he pinch-hit in the bottom of the ninth, drawing an intentional walk and, in a key to the 10-9, come-from-behind win, broke up a sure double play with a deft slide into second base. "That's playing the game," Kotsay said. "Anytime you put me in, I'm going to go hard."
In his lone season with Atlanta, Kotsay hit .289 with six homers and 37 RBIs in 88 games. --OF Josh Anderson, named on Tuesday to the International League's postseason All-Star team, was recalled from Class AAA Richmond to take the roster spot of CF Mark Kotsay, who was traded to the Red Sox late Wednesday morning.
--OF Luis Sumoza was acquired from the Red Sox in exchange for CF Mark Kotsay. Sumoza, 20, was signed by the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent on July 24, 2004. The 6-foot outfielder played for the short-season Lowell of the New York-Penn League this season and batted .301 with 15 doubles and 38 RBIs in 51 games. He ranked second in the league in on-base-plus-slugging percentage (.915) and slugging percentage (.549), and his 11 home runs were tied for second. He will be assigned to Class A Rome (Ga.).
--1B Casey Kotchman, on the bereavement list to be with his mother, who is hospitalized in Florida, was transferred to the restricted list.
--LHP Mike Hampton pitched a season-high eight innings and recorded a season-high five strikeouts against the Marlins. He allowed three runs on eight hits.
