Atlanta Braves Notes, Quotes 2008-11-13
--RHP John Smoltz and LHP Tom Glavine have officially filed for free agency; both veterans are rehabbing from in-season surgeries and will not be able to gauge their abilities to pitch next season before January.

--1B Casey Kotchman is expected by GM Frank Wren to be an 80- to 90-RBI guy next season. Kotchman had a tough debut after being traded to the Braves last July, due to a bout with the flu and the critical illness of his mother.

--LHP Will Ohman made 83 appearances for the Braves last season, one off RHP Chris Reitsma's team record. That overuse is most likely what caused him to falter at the end of the season, and that, in turn, has reduced his value, costing the Braves a draft pick if he signs elsewhere as a free agent.

--LHP Mike Hampton will be inclined to give the Braves special consideration after they stuck with him for the nearly three years he didn't pitch. But if he has to choose among offers from Atlanta and West Coast teams, the fact that his family will be at his Arizona home would trump that.

--RF Jeff Francoeur's name is surfacing periodically on the rumor mill, but just because a team inquires about him does not mean that the Braves are shopping him. And they aren't.

BY THE NUMBERS: 97 mph -- The speed of Japanese RHP Junichi Tazawa's fastball, which explains why the Braves would love to sign him.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We've got to maintain our depth and our main strength in our system." -- General manager Frank Wren, on holding onto the organization's most prized prospects.
