Atlanta Braves Notes, Quotes 2009-04-04
--CF Jordan Schafer has made the Opening Day roster, the Braves announced on April 3. OF Gregor Blanco, who had been competing with him for time in center field, was optioned to Class AAA Gwinnett. RHP Manny Acosta, LHP Boone Logan and OF Brandon Jones also were optioned to Gwinnett.

--3B Chipper Jones signed a three-year contract extension worth $42 million, with an option that could make the deal worth $61 million. That keeps Jones, 36, in a Braves uniform through 2012 at the least. The 2013 option year has vesting levels but would become a $7 million club option if those levels aren't reached.

--1B Casey Kotchman is trying to regain the 10 pounds and the strength he lost while battling flu-like symptoms followed by a bout of food poisoning. He missed 10 days of camp.

--LF Garret Anderson returned to the lineup after missing 3 1/ 2 weeks with a strained right calf. He wasn't legging out groundballs in his last spring appearances, and that's the way manager Bobby Cox wanted it.

--LHP Tom Glavine needed only 10 pitches in the last inning of his April 1 outing against the Tigers in Lakeland, Fla. Glavine, rehabbing from last season's shoulder and elbow surgery, gave up three earned runs on seven hits over five innings. Glavine will open the season on the 15-day disabled list, but he is expected to be ready to start as soon as he's eligible.

--C David Ross strained his right groin in the March 31 game against the Astros, and he will open the season on the 15-day disabled list. C Clint Sammons will make the Opening Day roster.

--LHP Jeff Ridgway was released. Still recovering from a sore elbow, he had been unable to throw for three weeks.

--RHP Rafael Soriano, slowed this spring by a strained side muscle, hopes to be ready to start the season on time. He threw a scoreless inning against the Astros on April 2.

--OF Josh Anderson was traded to the Tigers on March 30 for minor league RHP Rudy Darrow. That narrowed the battle for the center field job down to rookie Jordan Schafer and Gregor Blanco, with one of the two probably ticketed for Class AAA Gwinnett.

Darrow, 25, split last season between high Class A and Class AA, going a combined 5-3 with 10 saves and a 2.02 ERA. He was assigned to the Braves' Class AA Mississippi team.

--RHP Peter Moylan has been working on a new changeup with former Brave Gene Garber. Moylan, not seriously expected to return from last May's Tommy John surgery until this May, made the Opening Day roster.

BY THE NUMBERS: 30 -- Pitchers who appeared for the Braves in the 2008 season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I feel dangerous again." --RF Jeff Francoeur.
