--RHP John Smoltz (inflammation, right biceps and rotator cuff) pitched two innings in a rehab appearance Thursday night for Class A Rome (Ga.), allowing no runs on one hit and striking out three. He has tentative plans to pitch there again Saturday night.
--CF Mark Kotsay has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain (retroactive to May 26) and has returned to Atlanta for further evaluation. Kotsay had reported marked improvement in his back the last three days. --OF Josh Anderson has been recalled from Class AAA Richmond. Anderson, acquired from the Astros in exchange for RHP Oscar Villarreal during the offseason, hit .358 (24-for-67) in 21 games with the Astros in 2007.
--LHP Mike Gonzalez ("Tommy John" rehab) pitched one inning (14 pitches) in a rehab assignment for Class AA Mississippi Thursday, allowing no runs on two hits. He will likely pitch another inning Saturday.
--LHP Will Ohman's save May 22 was his first since June 26, 2007 as a Cubs pitcher. It's not likely he'll have a lot of those this season, though, because while manager Bobby Cox calls on Ohman frequently, it is generally to face only one or two batters.
