--3B Chipper Jones returned to the Atlanta starting lineup after missing two starts with a slightly torn right quadriceps muscle. The 36-year-old switch-hitting slugger finished 1-for-3 to lower his league-leading average to .419. However, Jones appeared to re-injure the quad in the sixth and was removed for precautionary reasons by Braves manager Bobby Cox. He hopes to play on Thursday.
--RHP Jair Jurrjens was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday with a twisted right ankle. Jurrjens, who will likely make his next start, was replaced by RHP Jeff Bennett. Bennett was ineffective, allowing seven runs and seven hits in two-plus innings for Atlanta. --One day after RHP John Smoltz had season-ending surgery, Atlanta's other star pitcher, LHP Tom Glavine, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left elbow. It is the second time that Glavine has been placed on the disabled list in his Cooperstown-bound career. Braves manager Bobby Cox announced that rookie RHP Charlie Morton would take Glavine's place in the rotation and will make his major league debut on Saturday. Morton is 5-2 with a 2.05 ERA in 13 games (12 starts) for Class AAA Richmond this season.
--LHP Jeff Ridgway was recalled from Class AAA Richmond. The 27-year-old southpaw made his major league season debut Wednesday, allowing one hit and striking out two over two scoreless innings. He allowed seven runs in one-third of an inning with the Rays last season. Ridgway was 2-0 with four saves and a 4.64 ERA in 28 appearances in Class AAA this year.
--The Braves also swapped one outfielder for another on Wednesday, recalling OF Brandon Jones from Class AAA Richmond, while optioning OF Josh Anderson to their top minor league club. The move was somewhat puzzling as Anderson put up solid numbers with the parent club, batting .318 with two RBIs and two stolen bases in four games for the Braves.
