Atlanta Braves Roster Report 2009-04-07
The Braves played well in spring training even without the bats of 3B Chipper Jones and C Brian McCann, who were away from camp for three weeks as part of Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. The team has more outfielders, starters and relievers than it has opening-day roster spots, but general manager Frank Wren is inclined to hoard them rather than trade them.

PLAYER NOTES:

--LHP Tom Glavine, rehabbing from last season's shoulder and elbow surgery, is slated to pitch a simulated game April 7 with Class AAA Gwinnett and then pitch on Easter Sunday "somewhere". Otherwise, he will be staying with the major league club.

--2B Kelly Johnson led off in the opener against the Phillies, but manager Bobby Cox was quick to say that's not his permanent lineup. "We'll be playing with that probably all season long," Cox said about the top of the order.

--CF Jordan Schafer, who became the 99th player to hit a home run in his first major league at-bat, hit only 10 homers last season at Class AA Mississippi. Schafer skipped Class AAA altogether.

--3B Chipper Jones called the first players-only meeting of his career before the season opener in Philadelphia. Now that the team leader's role has become his, he wanted to make sure someone said out loud that there's no room for mediocrity this season.

--RF Jeff Francoeur, who hit a home run with the first pitch he saw Sunday night in Philadelphia, was able to do what he hoped he'd do, which is to maintain his new batting stance even amid the excitement of opening day. Francoeur's new open stance allows him to see the ball earlier and longer.
