Braves-Angels Preview 2008-06-15

Braves-Angels Preview 2008-06-15
Interleague play seems to be bringing out the best in the Atlanta Braves this season.

The revitalized Braves go for a three-game sweep of the AL West-leading Los Angeles Angels as the teams conclude their three-game series Sunday night in Anaheim.

The Braves (34-35) entered this series after being swept by a pair of NL division leaders. They dropped three home games to NL East rival Philadelphia before opening their current road trip with three losses to the Cubs in Chicago.

Against the Angels, though, it's been a different story. Atlanta followed a 5-2 victory in Friday's series opener with a 9-4 win Saturday night. The Braves are 4-1 in interleague play in 2008, compared with a record four games below .500 when playing their NL rivals.

The first two games of this series mark the first consecutive road wins for the Braves - owners of a major league-worst 9-24 record away from home - since April 11-12 at Washington.

Third baseman Chipper Jones returned to the Atlanta lineup after an accident in batting practice - in which a ball struck him under the eye - had kept him out of Friday's game. He went 0-for-3 to drop his major league-leading average to .409, but he also walked twice and drove in a run.

Minor-league call-up Charlie Morton pitched six solid innings Saturday to win his major league debut, and also became the ninth pitcher to start a game this season in the injury-riddled Atlanta rotation.

"It's not the ideal circumstances, getting called up because of the injuries," Morton said. "There's always the sense that, if you're pitching well, they might need you at the next level. So I just tried to be as prepared as possible and the situation came along."

Former reliever Jorge Campillo (2-0, 2.15 ERA) has also been pressed into starting duty because of injuries, and on Sunday he'll try to pitch the Braves to the sweep.

Campillo has left without a decision in each of his last two starts, including a 6-3 loss to Philadelphia last Sunday, when he allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings. The right-hander, who pitched in relief through mid-May, returned to the bullpen for Thursday's game at Chicago. He retired the only batter he faced on one pitch.

Despite pitching for the AL West rival Seattle Mariners for parts of three seasons from 2005-07, Campillo has never faced the Angels.

The Angels (41-28), who are trying to avoid their first three-game sweep at home since June 25-27 of last season against Kansas City, will send Joe Saunders (9-3, 3.32) to the mound.

Saunders would no doubt like to put his last start behind him. The left-hander yielded a career high-tying eight runs and 10 hits over 4 2-3 innings of Monday's 13-4 loss to Tampa Bay, and while doing so allowed the Rays' Evan Longoria, Willy Aybar and Dioner Navarro to hit consecutive home runs off him in the second inning.

"They got my pitch count up there," said Saunders, who has given up six homers in his last three starts. "It's just one of those games where you have to forget about it."

Saunders has never faced the Braves.
