Braves-Blue Jays Preview 2008-06-28

Braves-Blue Jays Preview 2008-06-28
Atlanta starter Tim Hudson is hoping that his luck in interleague games has finally turned.

Hudson will be trying to build on his first interleague win since joining the National League when the Braves continue a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday at Rogers Centre.

Hudson (8-5, 2.96 ERA) threw seven scoreless innings on Sunday, earning an 8-3 win over Seattle. Entering the game, the right-hander had gone 0-10 with a 7.82 ERA in 12 interleague starts since joining the Braves (40-41) for the 2005 season.

Hudson started his career with Oakland, and went 10-2 with a 2.50 ERA in 21 interleague starts for the A's between 1999-2004.

"It's just one of those things where you happen to have bad games against teams from the American League," he said.

Perhaps more importantly for the Braves, Hudson bounced back after giving up six runs in 4 1-3 innings in a 7-5 loss in Texas five days earlier. He had gone 0-2 despite a 3.58 ERA over his previous five starts since beating the New York Mets on May 22.

Now, Hudson could have a good shot at another win against the AL - he is 10-2 with a 2.61 ERA in 14 career starts against the Blue Jays (38-43). However, he lost his only start against them since joining the Braves, allowing five runs in seven innings of a 6-3 home loss on June 21, 2006.

The Braves won for the fourth time in six games on Friday, beating Toronto 4-0 in the opener. Rookie starter Jair Jurrjens went eight innings, and Mark Teixeira homered and drove in three runs.

Teixeira is batting .429 (9-for-21) with five homers and 10 RBIs over his last six games.

The Braves own one of the worst road records in the majors at 12-27, but have won five of eight away from home. They improved to 4-10 without Chipper Jones, who leads the majors with a .394 batting average and missed his sixth straight start with a right quad injury.

Atlanta will be trying to move back to .500 for the first time since it was 32-32 on June 8.

The Blue Jays were shut out for the sixth time this season and second time in seven games. They had won three of four after dropping seven in a row and had scored 34 runs in their previous four games.

Cito Gaston, named to his second stint as Toronto's manager after John Gibbons was fired, fell to 3-4 since taking over. He was teammates with Atlanta manager Bobby Cox in the Braves' minor league system and was hired as Toronto's hitting coach by Cox - the Blue Jays' manager from 1982-85 - before winning a pair of World Series in 1992 and 1993 during his first tenure as the team's skipper.

The Blue Jays will call up John Parrish from Triple-A Syracuse to start in place of Shaun Marcum, who is on the disabled list with a right elbow strain. Parrish, who is making his season debut, is 10-1 with a 2.74 ERA in 15 appearances - 11 starts - at Syracuse.

"I think he deserves a shot at it," Gaston told the Blue Jays' official team Web site.

The 30-year-old left-hander pitched for Baltimore from 2000 until he was traded to Seattle in August last season. He is 12-12 with a 4.63 ERA in 161 career outings, including 2-6 with a 6.85 ERA in 10 starts.

Parrish, whose is making his first start since 2004 and second since 2001, has never faced Atlanta.
