BRAVES: Infante signs for 2 years

BRAVES: Infante signs for 2 years
While the Braves prepared to introduce Japanese pitcher Kenshin Kawakami as the newest member of their starting rotation, they also signed utilityman Omar Infante to a two-year, $4.3 million contract Monday that includes a third-year club option in 2011.

Infante played five positions for Atlanta in 2008 and hit .293 with 40 RBIs, including .300 with 29 RBIs in 55 games after the All-Star break.

Infante would have been eligible for free agency after the 2009 season. He will get $1.85 million in 2009 and $2.25 million in 2010, with a $2.5 million option for 2011 that includes a $250,000 buyout.

Left-handed reliever Will Ohman, a free agent, is considering contract offers from the Braves and several other teams.

Kawakami is slated to be introduced at a news conference today at Turner Field. The 33-year-old right-hander agreed to a three-year deal and flew from Tokyo to Atlanta on Sunday for a physical on Monday.

The Braves hope to top their rebuilt rotation with free agent Derek Lowe, who visited team officials for five hours Thursday. Lowe is also being pursued by the Mets and Phillies, and possibly others. Agent Scott Boras hasn't indicated how quickly Lowe would make a decision.

Glavine pushes pitching to Friday

Tom Glavine was scheduled to throw from the mound Monday for the first time since elbow and shoulder surgery in August. He decided to push that to Friday but said it was not because of any setback.

"I decided that I wanted to do two more times of long toss before I get on the mound," Glavine said. "Not for any other reason other than just trying to be conservative with this thing. No setbacks, no bump in the road --- just conservatively speaking, it's the smart thing to do."

Glavine, 42, is attempting a comeback from the first arm surgery of his career. He has said he will let his arm dictate whether he returns with the Braves or retires.

If he returns, Glavine said he wants to pitch for Atlanta, although a contract has not been discussed. He said last week that playing for another team is not an option right now.

"I'm not saying if I feel healthy and feel like I can pitch and the Braves don't have an interest in me, that doesn't mean I may not turn my interest to somebody else if somebody else has interest," Glavine said. "But for right now, that's not part of the equation."
