Braves-Reds Preview
Their home winning streak is over, but a three-game set against the Atlanta Braves could be a good chance for the Cincinnati Reds to get back on track.

The Reds will try to try to take advantage of the NL's worst road team on Friday when their series with the Braves begins at Great American Ball Park.

Cincinnati (25-29) lost 7-2 to Pittsburgh on Thursday, failing to wrap up a three-game sweep and falling for the first time in 10 home games. The home winning streak was the Reds' longest in 28 years and improved their record at Great American to 16-9 before the loss in the series finale.

Cincinnati has a great chance to bounce back on Friday, as the Braves (29-25) own the worst road record in the league at 7-18. Atlanta, which also owns the best home record in the NL at 22-7, had dropped 11 of 13 away from home before Thursday's 8-1 win in Milwaukee.

The Reds lost on Thursday in part because of the lingering effects of an 18-inning, 12-9 loss in San Diego on Sunday. Starter Aaron Harang pitched in relief in that game and was battered for six runs in four innings against the Pirates.

"I think it affected him quite a bit," manager Dusty Baker said. "I think it caught up with him. He took one for the team on Sunday."

Edinson Volquez (7-2, 1.31 ERA) also came out of the bullpen in Sunday's marathon, but will have had four days' rest before he takes the mound Friday.

Volquez, who owns the lowest ERA in the majors, gave up the game-winning, three-run homer in the 18th. Though he threw just 1 2-3 innings, the three runs he allowed - all unearned - were a season high.

"You hate to see Edinson lose that game on an unearned run when we were out of the inning," Baker said.

The relief appearance was the fourth of Volquez's career and his first since 2005. Two days earlier, Volquez gave up just one run in six innings without getting a decision in Cincinnati's 3-2 win over the Padres.

Volquez's only other loss this season came in his first career start against the Braves on May 2, when he allowed two runs in six innings of a 2-0 road defeat.

Chipper Jones went 1-for-2 against Volquez in that game. Jones was 2-for-4 with two walks on Thursday, extending his hitting streak to 11 games and boosting his major league-leading batting average to .420.

Mark Teixeira, who hits behind Jones and was the beneficiary of the two walks, was 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs. Atlanta had scored just two runs while losing the first two games of the series.

"The guy's hitting .420, he's going to get walked," Teixeira said. "I've never seen somebody this locked in for two months to start a season."

Now, Tom Glavine (2-2, 4.76) will try to help the Braves win back-to-back road games for just the third time this season.

Glavine gave up the second grand slam of his career and was pounded for six runs in 4 2-3 innings of Sunday's 9-3 loss to Arizona. The 42-year-old left-hander had won his previous two starts, including a 6-1 win over the Mets five days earlier.

Glavine is making his 50th start against the Reds and is 27-12 with a 3.46 ERA all-time against them. He yielded six runs in 4 2-3 innings against Cincinnati on May 4, but the Braves won 14-7.
