Owings earns his first win as a Red
CINCINNATI - Micah Owings brushed aside the Atlanta Braves with 102 pitches, stopped the Cincinnati Reds' two-game losing streak and won his first game for the Reds , an 8-2 romp in the park Sunday, April 26.

That wasn't enough action. For 15 minutes after the game he rode the stationary bike, filled with more adrenaline than Lance Armstrong.

Owings, obtained from the Arizona Diamondbacks in last year's trade for Adam Dunn, lost his first two starts for the Reds this year and manager Dusty Baker said before the game, "We need to get Micah a win."

He grasped it and he did it with his pitching and some Paul Bunyan batwork from Jay Bruce and Joey Votto.

Owings held the Braves to one run and six hits over seven innings while Bruce homered twice to drive in four runs and Votto drove in three with a basesloaded triple.

"I can't say enough about the offense, they exploded in the fifth inning (six runs)," Owings said.

Bruce's two-run home run in the fourth gave Owings a 2-0 lead, then Votto's three-run triple and another two-run Bruce homer punctuated the six-run fifth.

Since missing three games in Houston with a swollen right hand, Bruce has hit safely in all six games, raising his average from .173 to .286.

"I worked on some stuff in spring training that I think it is going to help me," said Bruce, who took a shaving cream pie in the face and a bucket of water over his head during a post-game TV interview. "Swinging at strikes, let it come to me and don't try to go get everything," he said "I worked on my mental approach. I got myself out a whole lot last year and at the beginning of this year. The key is to get a pitch I can handle, not swing at their pitch."

Of beating the Braves after losing Friday and Saturday, Bruce said: "The thing I like most is that we forgot about losing the first two and we played good Baseball and beat 'em, showed 'em we can play with anybody. We showed a lot to ourselves and to others."

And Owings showed a few things, too, after asking Aaron Harang before the game, "How does it feel to win a game? It has been a long time for me (July 20, 2008, one inning of relief against the Cubs)."

Said Baker, "That was much needed, big time. It helps our team's morale to get this win after having a big road trip (7-3) then losing two in a row at home. Hopefully our offense is waking up."

The Reds had 11 hits - three by Bruce, two by Votto and two by catcher Ramon Hernandez, "Who is really starting to come around with the bat," Baker said.
