Record nice on road, not so nice at Turner

Record nice on road, not so nice at Turner
NEW YORK --- With one-fifth of their season completed, the Braves have been almost as good on the road as they've been bad at home.

They were 11-7 in road games before Tuesday, the second-best road record in the major leagues behind Cincinnati (11-5). But they are 5-9 at Turner Field, which ranked as the worst home winning percentage in the majors.

"I don't have an answer for that," Braves manager Bobby Cox said of the disparity, which has been even more dramatic in recent weeks.

The Braves were 8-2 with a 3.38 ERA in their past 10 road games before Tuesday, and 2-9 with a 4.36 ERA in their past 11 home games.

They hit .267 with 10 homers and 5.3 runs per game during the 8-2 road binge, and just .236 with three total homers and 3.1 runs per game during the 2-9 home skid.

Chipper in lineup

Chipper Jones returned to the lineup Tuesday night after missing the series-opening win with a sore and swollen right elbow.

The Braves third baseman hyperextended the elbow on consecutive swings Sunday at Philadelphia, and he has also had some tendinitis all season. He left Sunday's game in the seventh inning and didn't play Monday because he didn't think he could make a strong throw to first base.

"I went out and threw a while ago, and it felt better," he said before batting practice Tuesday. "It still doesn't feel great."

Glasses get foggy

Catcher Brian McCann hasn't had any trouble hitting with his new prescription sports glasses, but he caught the last five innings Monday without them after they fogged up. He decided not to wear them while catching Tuesday's game, at least at the start.

"I think it was because it was cold out and the heat from my body made them foggy," McCann said.

He has tried an anti-fogging spray without much success, but the fogging has been a problem only when he has his facemask on. And only in the cooler night air in New York.

McCann is scheduled to have a second pair of the glasses arrive later this week, and he plans to use one for catching and one for hitting. That way, he won't have to worry as much about scratches on the lenses from wearing them under his mask.

He has been hesitant to use anti-fogging sprays that have been recommended to him, for fear that he'll mess up the only pair of glasses he currently has. Because while he sees well enough to catch without glasses if he must, he can't hit without them.
